II. Jesus Carries His Cross
The cruelty of the soldier is shown by his haughty stature; he almost throws the cross at Jesus, not caring whether it crushes Him or not. At the bottom of the window we see a barbed whip. With great equanimity Jesus takes the instrument of His torture and death. He embraces the Cross out of obedience to the Father’s Will. Even though Jesus willingly accepts His Passion, the Romans (and all of us sinners) still choose to punish the Spotless Lamb.
