III. Jesus Falls the First Time

Here we see Our Lord collapse under the weight of the Cross: the weight of our sins. He does not cry out, nor does He let go of the Cross. As He collects Himself to move again, the soldier whips Him to demonstrate his power over Christ. How many times have we added sin upon sin like the soldier added injury upon injury? In the top left corner, the three nails of the cross stand ready in a sea of red. The Blood of Our Lord is already being poured out for the remission of sins.
